Having a baby in South Carolina can be a very happy time for the parents. People are excited to either start their family or add to it and the expectations are generally that the baby will be healthy and everything during the delivery will go smoothly. However, things do not always go according to plan and sometimes the baby may suffer birth injuries during the process.
Some of the injuries may be unavoidable given the circumstances, but some could be avoided if the doctors and medical staff did things differently. There are many different injuries that babies can suffer as well and the severity of those injuries can vary, but some of those injuries can be very significant. Children may be dealing with these injuries for the rest of their lives.
Common birth injuries
While there are many different birth injuries that can occur some are more common than others. Some of the more common injuries are:
- Brachial palsy – This often times occurs when there are difficulties delivering the child’s shoulders and in order to get the child out, it damages the nerves to the arms and hands.
- Facial Paralysis – This can occur when there is pressure put on the baby’s face during the delivery process. This can occur when forceps are used during the delivery process.
- Fractures – Often times when there is a fracture, the clavicle or collarbone is the bone that is fractured. It occurs when there is difficulty getting the baby’s shoulders out.
- Caput succedanum – This is swelling around the baby’s scalp. It can occur when vacuums are used to deliver the child.
The birth injuries that occur can be very costly too as they may require years of medical treatment. It can also cause the child to have many more difficulties throughout life which may require additional costs for services. Parents who find themselves in this unfortunate position may be entitled to compensation though. Birth injury cases can be very complicated though and experienced attorneys may be a useful resource.
